Il est considéré comme l’un des pères de l’art de l’affiche publicitaire italienne moderne, aux côtés de personnalités telles qu’Adolf Hohenstein, Giovanni Maria Mataloni, Leopoldo Metlicovitz et Marcello Dudovich.
Sa carrière débute comme caricaturiste pour des magazines parisiens tels que « Le Rire », « Le Cri de Paris » et « L’Assiette au Beurre ». Mais c’est dans le domaine de l’affiche publicitaire que Cappiello révolutionne l’art visuel de l’époque. Il a introduit l’utilisation de figures audacieuses se détachant sur des fonds sombres, créant un fort impact visuel qui a immédiatement capté l’attention des spectateurs.
Parmi ses œuvres les plus célèbres figurent les affiches pour « Maurin Quina » (1906), « Bitter Campari » (1921) et « Parapluie Revel » (1922). Bien qu’il n’ait pas suivi de formation académique spécifique, Cappiello a démontré un talent inné pour le design visuel. Naturalisé français, Cappiello vécut à Paris la majeure partie de sa vie, travaillant sans relâche jusqu'à sa mort le 2 février 1942 à Cannes. Aujourd'hui ses œuvres sont exposées dans les plus grands musées du monde et sont des objets de collectionneurs.
